Drivers with private registration numbers have been wrongly fined for ULEZ charges by the Transport for London (TFL).
A recent article by CarDealer magazine highlighted how a supercar car dealer had been billed more than £2,000 in charges for visiting London in a Land Rover Discovery - when in fact, the car had been off the road for repairs. The seller had appealed the charges, but after getting nowhere - took to social media.
CarDealer investigated and TFL refunded the fees.
TFL told CarDealer magazine that they apologised for any issues they had caused the seller and refunded all the charges. They also confirmed they have put processes in place to prevent this happening in the future. TFL stated “ There is a long-established charge dispute process where anyone who believes they have been incorrectly charged on Auto Pay can submit a dispute and we will consider the evidence”.
The seller of the Discovery was pleased with the outcome but obviously still concerned that other motorists could be getting charged. In fact, when he posted the story on social media, other drivers also reported they had faced similar problems, including those with short, private plates. Another motorist was being charged ULEZ fees for cars that included part of his private plate - clearly an issue with the TFL cameras & technology.
If you think you have been wrongly charged, you can contact TFL and dispute the charge. Further details of the ULEZ zones and contact details visit https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone.
